Swiffer Advertisement essay
I strongly agree with your analysis of the Swiffer advertisement. Advertisements are a reflection of the values and practices in the society, and this is particularly true for cleansing merchandizing commercials. For the many years I have been watching television, I have never seen an advertisement in which the man is shown cleaning the house, dishes, or clothes. The commercials that feature men do so in a satirical manner to make the audience think that it is unusual for the males to do something like that. The advertisements socialize gender by justifying the roles and beliefs of each sex. The socialization of gender facilitates gender stereotypes that form the basis for sexism in the community (Exon and Arrow). For instance, the cleaning ads make women who are not particularly keen about cleaning appear strange. The commercials may also influence the women’s access to education and job opportunities by creating the perceptions that they should not study or learn because they will eventually become wives and mothers who are expected to clean and serve their families.
The three sociological perspectives, interactionism, conflict, and functionalism, provide explanations for gender socialization. The symbolic interactionist theory explains the socialization of gender using three tenets. The three tenets are that people act towards things and individuals according to the meaning they derive from them, the definitions stem from the social interaction amongst persons, and meaning-making and comprehension are continuous interpretive procedures, during which the original definition changes slightly, radically, or remains the same (Lindsey 39).........GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
