Introduction

Advertising has different effects on individuals since everyone has unique life experiences. What may work for one person may not do the same for another; consequentially, the commercials are subjective to everyone on a case by case basis. Therefore, how can a company get through to many consumers? What makes a good or bad commercial? This essay explores the realm of advertising and its effects based on examples of a good and bad commercial.

Bad Advert

The above advert was produced by Bloomingdale, a luxury enterprise owned by the Macy’s Inc. The commercial titled “Spike Your Best Friend’s Eggnog When They’re Not Looking” did not settle well with the victims of domestic violence and rape who saw it as an encouragement of the rape culture. Statistics were even used to show that the largest percentage of rape incidents were committed by persons who were close to the victims. Bloomingdale was thus forced to make a public apology citing it as an error in judgment. The advertisement failed to capture the intentions of the company which was to provide a fun perspective of the holidays. Instead, it was insensitive to the rape victims. Bloomingdale tried too hard to capture the attention of the consumers which is risky in most instances. The commercial also perpetuated violence and created controversy (Goldstein par. 5)..................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
