However, some immigrants were discriminated against. The Irish are among the people that struggled to fit into the United States society. The United States saw the discrimination of the Irish but the situation changed and they fit into the society.
The article gives a better understanding of the changing perception of Irish immigrants in America. It comes out that they have been accepted as patriotic Americans. The idea is unlike before where they were seen as traitors for supporting the pope (Hauptman, 2003). Their stay in the United States proved that they are patriotic like any other group. Irish Americans have also come out as economically stable and well educated.
There are forces that allowed Irish people to be assimilated into U.S culture despite initial resistance. Firstly, they fought in wars that concerned the United States. Here, their soldiers risked their lives for the nation. Secondly, they received good education to ensure that they did not depend on small wages. There was a perception that Irish immigrants would take jobs away from other Americans (McCaffrey, 2004). However, with time Irish Americans acquired proper education and became financially stable. Thirdly, Irish Americans were discriminated for being catholic. It comes out that the United States had a foundation of Protestantism. However, they later ensured that they participated in building the economy like other people.
Foreigners built the United States. The nation has seen the Irish face racial discrimination. The reason is because they came to the nation poor and took menial jobs from natives. Their belief in the Catholic Church made Americans dislike the Irish. However, with time they fit into the American society and acquire good education.
