The assessment of learning outcomes has had a long history, but over the past years, it has been given precedence due to paradigm shifts, internationalization, and education challenges and trends. The trends in learning have pushed educators to develop new understandings and skills in their assessment and teaching activities. The directive of this paper is to identify the primary changes in assessment in comparison to personal experience while gauging their potential implications on learning outcomes.
The term assess which arises from the Latin word “assidere” focuses on the concept of sitting with a learner to evaluate their needs and outcomes. Following the Garden Analogy, students are similar to plants since under the appropriate conditions they mature to produce good fruits. Through assessment, the educators can provide the necessary conditions needed for the growth and development of the learners. The assessment process exists in two forms. Firstly, the teachers can conduct a formative assessment which entails the evaluation for learning with the main focus being future educational outcomes. Secondly, the educators can carry out the summative assessment with the aim of identifying what the students have learned in the past (Zientara, 2014).
The assessment mechanisms are often under scrutiny to ensure that the learning institutions maximize student potential and outcomes. Hence, they continue to change to accommodate emerging trends and educational needs based on the local and international environment. The factor explains why the assessment techniques conducted today are quite different from the ones used during my childhood days or at my workplace. The public is more involved in the educational process to facilitate a collaborative or common understanding concerning the education process (Schmuck, Bell, and Bell, 2012). Consequentially, the recent times have been characterized by educational policies grounded on the standards-based assessment and accountability. For instance, many countries have identified the core subjects required for students as well as the maximum units needed to graduate from each learning institution.
