DOMESTIC CONTAINMENT IN THE U.S ASSIGNMENT
DOMESTIC CONTAINMENT IN THE U.S ESSAY
The text “cold war ideology and the rise of feminism” is a document by Elaine Tyler May. It denotes the experiences of the United States women in the period after the cold war. The author talks about women standing up against the mainstream society to bring change to their identity. The cold war era wanted to ensure that women were confined to household chores but the latter opposed the notion by all means.
The author states that the American society only used women as domestic servants. It comes out that they were determined to live their lives as they desired. The writer argues that the cold war era led people to believe that the woman was only fit for household work. The United States was determined to win the cultural ideology war against Russia. Women felt trapped in the process where they were supposed to remain at home while men worked. They were supposed to have children as a way of increasing the population.
According to the text, they resisted the idea by joining hands to oppose the government. In light of their argument, they needed a place in the country. They wanted to explore their talents through working for institutions just like their male counterparts. However, they felt like the society had conspired against their will and wanted them to remain stagnant in all aspects of life. Therefore, they staged massive protests where they came out in large numbers.
The government felt threatened by the activities of women. She felt like the communists from Russia were manipulating her society through women. Politicians sent agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into the activities of the women involved. The agents had to follow the women for over two years to see whether they could detect suspicious activities.
