My position is that healthcare in the United States is and should be a right and not a privilege. The main foundation of this position is the wording of the Declaration of Independence, which is one of the founding documents of our nation, providing that all human beings are born free and equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights including the right to the pursuit of happiness, liberty, and life. The same is reflected in major international human rights law instruments, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
A right generally refers to an entitlement while privilege refers to some special immunity, advantage, or right which one or a particular selected group is granted on the basis of their social, economic, cultural, racial, religious, or political conditions, positions, or backgrounds in the society. Healthcare and access to it are necessary for the preservation of human life and dignity, and hence there is no way it should and can be a privilege to be enjoyed only by a select few in the society. Further, it is necessary for the pursuit of human happiness and hence should be taken to be a right and not a privilege. Moreover, based on the early philosophical writings of Aristotle, Kant, Hobbes, Arendt, and Paine, health care should be considered as being a right rather than a mere privilege. Aristotle argued that for the human soul to grow or exist, it requires nourishment or fulfillment to enable one to desire, sense, and think or imagine. Drawing on this, it may be argued that healthcare is a necessity for the human soul to achieve full growth and to enable one to be a full citizen, intellect, or thinker. Also, Immanuel Kant talked about the force of morality whereby he argued that the natural bodies of humans possess some absolute worth and have certain desires, sensations, intelligence, and needs which require that everyone should be treated as they would wish to be treated.
