Implicit Bias Essay
Implicit or unconscious bias refers to the social stereotypes and attitudes that unconsciously impact the manner in which we understand or perceive others, their decisions, and actions. When people have certain negative attitudes towards others and tend to associate them with certain stereotypes without their conscious knowledge, they are said to be suffering from implicit bias or implicit social cognition. It is the stereotype-conforming thoughts and attitudes on people’s minds that make up implicit bias. According to Desmond-Harris (2016), what implicit bias means is that everyone is most certainly at least a little bit racist even though they do not really want to be. The reason for this notion is that in most cases, without our awareness and in spite of our best intentions, racial assumptions and stereotypes tend to creep into our minds and affect our actions. As an immigrant, I am affected in various ways by implicit bias that is so common in American society, particularly due to the negative racial and ethnic attitudes that people have towards immigrants. Implicit bias also plays a critical role in the creation of laws and policies.
The role that implicit bias plays in my life is that it affects the way I think about race and promotes discriminatory behavior towards immigrants like me. The stereotypes, attitudes, and messages that people pick up from the world affect my life in that it makes me have a negative perspective about race and national origins. The implicit bias promotes negative attitudes about immigrants since it makes them be seen as bad people while in actual sense they are not. The implicit bias also promotes discriminatory behavior towards immigrants and other people who are not seen as belonging. This way, most people who are immigrants feel not wanted or accepted by society since they are often mistreated and discriminated upon purely based on the stereotypes that people have about them. For instance, immigrants are often viewed as either dangerous people who mean no good to others or individuals who are just here to cause trouble and deny the natives their right to employment, for example. It makes some people to be favored more than others in the provision of government social services such as healthcare and education. Implicit bias also plays out in the employment field whereby people from certain racial or national origins are denied job opportunities due to the negative attitudes about them.......................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
