It is also important to understand the differences between instructional specific and general objectives that one needs to accomplish during a lesson or presentation.
Instructional goals refer to the general and broad statements concerning what the lesson is about or what is to be learned by those attending the training session (Iannon, Iannone, & Bernstein, 2013).
Unlike specific objectives, instructional goals are about the content of the course and do not necessarily concern the desired outcomes or objectives of a course. In a training of police personnel on how to respond to weapons of mass destruction incidents, the instructional goal may be framed as the participants being able to perform effectively and safely as they respond to incidents involving weapons of mass destruction. As can be seen from this example, the instructional goal is a general and broad objective that is intended to be achieved at the end of the training session. It does not necessarily go into the nuances or specifics of what the officers are expected to get out with but rather are general goals that the instructor wants to achieve (Vodde, 2009).
Moreover, unlike specific objectives, instructional goals are meant to provide direction to the training session and to set it on the right track. It helps in ensuring that those participating in police personnel training know the overall goal that they are expected to accomplish at the end of their training. While it does not go into the specifics of what is actually desired of the participants as is the case with specific objectives, instructional goals generally set the tone of the training session by giving the participants a head start about what the training is about and what it intends to achieve at the end.
