Mental Illness and Lone Wolf Terrorism Paper

Owing to the strong and radical personal ideologies, it is often argued that lone-wolf terrorists are mentally-ill persons or individuals with psychological abnormalities that make them vulnerable to religious, political, and social influences. Unfortunately, the theory of associating the lone-wolf’s acts of terrorism with mental conditions is inconclusive. From a personal standpoint and the critical examination of various course materials on the topic, I have come to the understanding that lone-wolf terrorists are largely rational individuals whose activities may appear irrational to other persons.

Lone-wolfs are people whose actions may seem counterintuitive because of the differences in perceptions or misguided ideologies. The misguided perceptions could stem from religious beliefs or social factors that make us believe that the terrorists are insane or unreasonable. However, from the cases and information in the course materials, terrorists are intellectual individuals. Most of them are well-versed in different fields like engineering, religion, computers, business, and the like. They are also highly organized and rational strategists who take ample time to plan their attacks in fine detail (Alter & Coppins, 2011).

In most instances, attacks by lone-wolf terrorists are seamlessly executed and strategically designed. For example, the 2015 San Bernardino massacre conducted by Tashfeen Malik and Farook was carefully planned and efficiently executed ruling out any possibility of the perpetrators suffering from mental disorders. No such perfect execution and organization can be accomplished by a random maniac or mentally-ill person. On the other hand, it is essential to recognize the examples of some lone-wolf attackers who may have had pathological challenges. For instance, Ted Kaczynski’s lifestyle may have depicted some psychological abnormalities that may or may not have precipitated his actions (Spaaij, 2010).

In conclusion, the research suggesting that lone-wolf terrorists suffer from mental conditions is not definite or conclusive. However, the individuals have vulnerabilities and socio-psychological factors that drive them to commit acts of terrorism. Their ideologies may appear insane or irrational to others, but they are grounded on misguided or radicalized religious, social, and political beliefs. Moreover, the level of organization and execution carried out by the terrorists cannot be attributed to individuals who are mentally-ill......................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
