Capitalism continues to be an integral system in the growth and management of many countries, especially the most developed nations like the United States. Popular culture embodies capitalism because it is first designed to encourage consumption among domestic markets, which translates to profits for the entertainment industry, and it exports the audiences to various realities, quickly assuming the role of American cultural imperialism. Both pop culture and capitalism reshape cultural and social dynamics and the financial sensibilities of people to produce violence as a coping mechanism.
In chapters 6, 7, and 9 of “Critical Issues in Crime and Justice” by Maguire & Okada (2011), the different authors examine the complex relationship that exists between the media, culture, economics, and crime. Violent video games provide a point of intersection for capitalism, violence, and popular culture. According to Muzzatti in Chapter 9 of the text, a game like Grand Theft Auto encourages the player to step into the life of Carl Johnson, CJ, as he goes back to his home in San Andreas. The town is modeled as an interactive “Boys n the Hood” style that offers the players a chance to fulfill their popular culture fantasies. It mainly targets the middle-class youth, who have higher chances of accessing the video games, to target their desires to learn and interact with the poor, slum, African-American neighborhood (Muzzatti, 2011).
