Reliability and Validity in research
Reliability and Validity paper
In research, validity and reliability are important features in the analysis of the tools and results of a study. The two aspects play a significant role in determining good measurements for any research (Surbhi, 2017). Reliability refers to the extent to which measuring instruments control error to produce consistent results. A reliable instrument creates faith that one can depend on it. Validity on the other hand is concerned with the extent to which tool of research measures what it intends to measure. The two features are important in research because they reduce the level of researcher bias . Additionally, because the two measure the accuracy of a research, they play a role in determining the effects of errors of measurement in a study.
There are notable differences between the two aspects of validity and reliability. Foremost, validity is more concerned with accuracy while reliability puts more emphasis on precision (Twycross & Heale, 2015). Second, in some scales such multi-item scale, validity is of more importance than reliability. Moreover, reliability can be determined easily while validity requires complex analysis. Furthermore, there are four types of validity which include internal, external, construct and conclusion while there are two features, internal consistency and tests determine reliability (Twycross & Heale, 2015) .
Threats to Validity in Mixed Method Research
Many researchers are opting for mixed method design of research. This research method involves the concurrent use of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis. Convergent Parallel mixed method research involves collecting qualitative and quantitative data at the same time (Sweeney, 2016). The first threat to validity in this method is structural corroboration. It may be difficult to relate the data from the different sources. ....GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
