Social and Detailed Division of Labour Paper
Division of labour is a fundamental principle of modern industrial organization which has been use since the 18th century. It gives the capitalist a bigger profit margin compared to when the is no division of labour. It entails having limited tasks assigned to specific workers within a production set in order to maximize on each worker’s energy and output. As a human can perform multiple tasks which lead to provision of his/her needs the human species is considered to be multi-talented and through the social division of labour which he/she carries out during their life time (Braverman 1974, p.49). As when Charles Baggage invented the differential engine, he made notice of how the machine parts worked in harmony and no matter how small or large the parts were. Baggage principle of management gave him an easier time when managing on how to control his calculator in a much more manageable manner (Babbage 1961, p.147).
Detailed division of labour has been successfully used by big corporations to achieve the highest possible profit margin as they divide their labour force and task them specific job which becomes monotonous and thus can measure the time taken to complete for each product in line (Simpson, Achbar & Abbott, 2003). Its main purpose is to maximise on production with no care on how adversely it affects the labour force (Braverman 1974, p.50).
They tend to manipulate the supply market and change the prices causing imbalances and uncertainties keeping off the small time players. Detailed division of labour involves specialization in a single task. This type of labour division is usually planned and well thought making it easily controlled by the stakeholders (Braverman 1974, p.50). Detailed labour division is seen as it goes deeper by show even in providing a similar commodity, one person may have skill set best suited to making a handmade leather chair while another may use machine made leather.
The social division of labour, or the breakdown of the social labour on the basis of craft specialization, has existed in all known societies. Where there are no major complexities in production, the initial division of labour is through the gender line where a man performs ‘manly’ jobs, that is, those that require brute force while women will deem those that are more decorative (Spencer 2000, p. 12). When a capitalist arrives these workers will also get to learn almost all skill set so as to remain competitive. These ways of learning are what are seen as social division of labour (Braverman p50, 1974). Social labour division involves goods which can be exchanged in a market and are of not similar quality at some point because they are not easy to standardize.......................
