In the past, the American nation faced a lot of challenges on how it should allocate its power especially between the state and federal governments. It started during the colonial period where the colonists tried to present their grievances to the colonial government but the British were inconsiderate. Later, the declaration of independence enabled the Americans to understand their rights. When the constitution was later formed, the issues facing the article of confederation was fixed. It was during this period when there was an effective allocation of powers between the state and the federal government. In this paper, I will, therefore, discuss the way the Americans believed in self-government, personal freedom and the right of states helped shape the role of the state and the federal governments from the early 1600s to the Civil war.
The first colonial governments were formed because of the increased number of people in various parts of the American nation. It, therefore, resulted in the growth of cities and towns and as a result, there was the formation of regimes. Another reason that triggered the formation of the colonial governments was the establishment of the independent economies which gave the country a need to stand and represent for itself. Lastly, the British economies had attempted to control and govern the American nation hence making the citizens establish their forms of governments.
However, the colonialists opposed the Stamp Act because they claimed that it affected every individual in the country. They contended that the act was passed to raise more money which they considered to be inappropriate. Justifying their response according to the ideals of John Locke, the colonists claimed that it was not right for the Americans to be taxed. It was not ultimate because the taxes helped sustain the British troops by providing them with shelter and food while they were struggling to live better.
