Language barrier has for a long time been identified as the major problem in this sector, but in the recent years, lack of documentation has been identified as a challenge affecting the education of the immigrants. The educational industry has for a long time ignored the topic of documentation but it has a significant impact on this sector. Since teachers play a vital role in shaping the lives of the youth, better documentation will help by a considerable margin for the teachers to provide educational services. The problem has been introduced by people who were born outside the United States, but they migrated into the US without any form of documents, such as visas or any other type of legal permission to reside in the country.
Lack of documentation poses additional challenges to the parents, teachers, and the students because there is limited access to quality educational services. The number of undocumented immigrants has been estimated to be 12 million with only 2 million of them being enrolled in schools. The Plyler ruling helped the undocumented youths to access educational services to avoid the problems that are related to lack of education. Over thirty years after the verdict, it has been projected that 40 % of the undocumented youths have not been enrolled with only 15% of the undocumented youths enrolling to colleges (Jefferies, & Dabach, 2015).
The current Anti-immigration regulations create a distressing environment to the students who come from undocumented families. The hostile environment created by these regulations may harmfully affect the students’ social and emotional wellbeing, which in turn affects their educational performances. Undocumented students have limited access to some services in the United States when compared to the citizens because legal documents must be provided to access the governmental services. The attempt to prevent undocumented children from accessing educational services seems unreasonable because most of these immigrants are refugees from countries with political or social unrest.
The children may end up becoming depressed because of the anxiety brought about by the fear of being deported to their countries. Schools may also face challenges because of the lack of enough infrastructure to provide services to the students (Ichou, 2014). The lack of reliable and accurate documentation on the number of potential students living in a particular area may lead to the inadequate allocation of resources by the government. A high level of inequality is introduced between the undocumented and documented students in terms of access to services, such as educational and financial aids.
