The rate of employment in manufacturing sector has been declining over the recent past. Currently, the industry “accounts for less than ten per cent of the American workforce” (Kolhatkar 76). The economy has been earmarked by shutting down of plants and displacement of employees— who are now seeking jobs in big-box retail stores and fast-food restaurants, which have comparatively less attractive compensation. Even worse, these jobs are increasingly becoming few and far between.
Uncharacteristically, storefront retail is also generally performing dismally in the online marketplace. Prominent fast-food restaurants have resorted to “digital ordering kiosks” that seek to reduce cost by supplanting the human cashier (Kolhatkar 76). Multinational companies like Google and Uber are already staking on autonomous driving technology in pursuit of underscoring efficiency. Even the two million long-distance truck drivers are not at ease because the research on how to automate the trucks are rife. We are now hearing of laser-guided system— a construction automation machine that can lay at least 800 bricks per day, almost as twice as an average mason.
In hindsight, most of these jobs that automations are bearing away from the employees are low-skilled jobs, and are dominated by the minority groups, particularly the African Americans.
