Voting in U.S Assignment
Abolishing the current voting process in the US and replacing it with the requirement of eligible citizens to cast their votes through the use of an approved and secure smartphone app would bring various changes to the electoral process. First, it would improve the accuracy of the voting or electoral process by eliminating cases of electoral fraud as long as the system is secured against possible compromise through hacking. Furthermore, it would handle the current problem of documentation by reducing the number of physical documents required for voting. Additionally, this would reduce the expenses involved in arranging for election booths and employment of election officials to physically count and tally the vote as these functions would then be taken over and done by the electronic process. It would also be convenient to voters as they will not have to travel to polling stations to cast their votes since they would be able to do this from the comfort of their homes or workplaces.
I feel the method of fairness that would provide the best vote counting system or method in an electronic voting would be the successive voting procedure because it is consistent, independent, monotonic, neutral, Pareto-optimal, and not easy to manipulate.
However, it is not correct to deem this voting method as being fully secure since it could be susceptible to hacking where weak electronic systems have been employed by the electoral body. Additionally, as Centikaya and Centikaya (2007) observe, such an electronic voting method may suffer from validation and verification challenges regarding issues or requirements of privacy, robustness, fairness, eligibility, accuracy, and transparency. Besides the potential and real threat of the security e-voting process or system being compromised as allegedly happened in the concluded 2016 US Presidential elections, it is also not easy to validate and verify the authenticity of the results from such an electronic voting process.
Some of the consequences that are not intended and which come out of this vote casting method according to Carrier (2012) include voting system errors and fraud, a failure of technology amid voting, and the reduced transparency due to the inability of many electorates to understand the electoral system...........................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
